Halifax Suitcase Festival Poster
The First annual Halifax Suitcase Festival Presented by John Beale and Bus Stop Theatre
is proud to offer an impressive lineup of original shows that pack light and are ready to hit the road. The Festival runs May 5th-8th, 2011, at the Bus Stop Theatre and aims to bring together theatre artists of all disciplines and provide a common space to showcase their work. The festival was born out of a need for Halifax to be connected to national and international artists who travel the fringe circuits.
Thursday May 5th
6:30pm DUCT SHULTZ [50 min.] Thaddius Hatte
“You are a small time hood breaking into a pawn shop. You are stuck in a duct. You are going to die there.” This hilarious multimedia one-man performance was voted best Fringe comedy at Winnipeg and Vancouver Fringe Festivals. "Smart, funny piece of work worth seeing." John Armstrong
Followed by a special 10 min concert by the Serpvachorduum Trio, Moore, Allworth, and DeWolfe.
8pm EPIC PITCH [60 min.] Mikaela Dyke
Bertie Weber is heartbroken. Our Hero embarks on a journey to save his blessed village from a prophecy foretelling its eventual downfall. Braving high seas, a magical forest, a lawless frontier and an inhumanly industrialized city; a journey about how sometimes you need to rely on the kindness of others to find your voice. "Mikaela Dyke defines the term must-see” - CBC Newfoundland.
9:30pm CABARET Featuring: Ann Marie Kerr, Susanne Chui, Brianna Moore, Vanessa Furlong, with music by Doug Cameron & friends.
Friday May 6th
6:30pm VITORIO & other works [60 Min] Veronique Mackenzie
Vitorio Macello, aging moustachioed star of the classical ballet world, a legend in his own mind, poingant and pathetic, is inspired by Veronique's time at the National Ballet as a little girl and by watching the temper tantrums of Ballet Star Nureyev. Other works include Stick Man & Resistance is Futile. “Wickedly funny and thoroughly delightful” Andrea Nenemetz.
8 pm LISTLESS [50 Min] Lewis Wynne-Jones
Faced with the terrifying reality of the rest of his life – Wynne-Jones searches for present answers within a framework of the past. Somewhere in an attic, there’s a box filled with familiar things from your childhood. Poignant and funny, “Listless” examines what it would be like, deep in the throws of a quarter-life crisis, to relive everything you’ve done and realize that perhaps all the tools needed are directly in front of you, but hidden, somewhere inside the box. "Lewis Wynne-Jones oozes a seductive charm." Kate Watson
Followed by a special perfomance for a select audience by Lohifi Productions
9:30 pm CABARET [90 Min]
Featuring: Shawn Duggan & Kathryn McCormack, Matt Peach & Petra O’toole, Rosemary Reid, Brian Riley, Anne Davison, Ryan Doucette with music by Jeff Torbert and friends.
Saturday May 7th
6:30 pm TAKE IT WITH YOU [60min] DaPoPo Theatre
Armed with a portable collection of suitcases, toy instruments, hats, music, food stuffs and puppets, the performers sling pasta, climb ladders and feed pie to the audience. This comedic-absurdist performance collage is surprising and thought-provoking. It flies in the face of convention and expectation, inviting audience members to take a more active role in life and art.
8 pm THIS IS VIOLET [30 Min] Courtney Siebring
This is Violet is a solo tragicomedy performed in mask. Violet is stuck in bed - literally - and it’s here, in bed with Violet, where we encounter the relationship, ambitions, and longings that have become the objects of her affection. Reality and dream blur as a lonely and bed-bound Violet idolizes the “perfect life” to the tragically hilarious extreme.
ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF MR. N [20 Min] Igor Vlasichev
This is Igor’s first experimental mono spectacle. It's style is yet to be determined. It opens the path to the imaginary world of its creator which tells a story of a human being who does not have a permanent home and whose idiosyncratic habits have much room for improvement. Through this character author emphasizes the pointlessness of words and speech in general. Igor believes that his work is a living organism, that undergoes permutations in response to the audience, current world events and who knows what else...
